SECURING THE FUTURE OF CLEAN ENERGY TRANSPORT: MISC SIGNS VLEC SHIPBUILDING CONTRACTS WITH HHI

On 11 April 2025, MISC achieved a key milestone in its growth strategy with the signing of Shipbuilding Contracts with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for the construction of two Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLECs).
The contracts follow the earlier signing of two Time Charter Parties with PTT Public Company Limited (PTT), one of Thailand’s leading energy companies. This long-term partnership demonstrates the confidence placed in MISC’s capability to deliver high-performing, safe and efficient ethane shipping solutions. The ceremonial signing was held at the Aquatheatre, Aquaria KLCC symbolising our enduring connection to the maritime ecosystem and our commitment to environmental stewardship.
Each VLECs will have a capacity of 100,000 cubic metres, placing them among the largest of its kind in the world. Designed for transporting ethane from U.S export facilities to Thailand, these vessels are expected to be delivered in 2028 and chartered to PTT for a firm period of fifteen (15) years.
Quick fact! – Why this matters to our stakeholder?
- Energy Security – Reinforce long term supply stability for Asia’s Petrochemical value chain.
- Decarbonisation Support – Facilitates adoption of cleaner alternatives for industrial feedstock.

The signing was officiated by Mr. Zahid Osman, President & Group CEO of MISC and Mr. Seung Yong Park, President & Chief Operating Officer, Head of Marketing Division, Headquarters, HHI, and attended by MISC Executive Leadership Team and colleagues from both MISC and HHI. The event highlights the importance of trusted collaborations in achieving strategic growth and innovation in the maritime sector.
These next-generation vessels are more than just assets – they reflect MISC’s bold ambition to lead the future of energy transport. As a key pillar to our #deliveringProgress strategy, it embodies our commitment to innovation, trusted partnership and sustainable growth. With the support of our stakeholders, we are charting a course toward a more resilient and lower-carbon future.
CARING FOR THOSE AT SEA: MISC WELCOMES MALAYSIA MARINE DEPARTMENT AND MEDICAL EXPERTS ABOARD PUTERI DELIMA SATU

On 16 April 2025, MISC had the honour of hosting a delegation from the Malaysia Marine Department (MMD) Southern Region, along with a group of medical practitioners, aboard Puteri Delima Satu at MMHE Shipyard, Pasir Gudang, Johor.
This visit was part of the Medical Practitioner Familiarisation Course organised by MMD, to help doctors understand the realities of life at sea. Under the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules 1999, doctors must complete this course before they can be authorised to issue medical certificates to seafarers that determine if a crew member is fit to work offshore.
The course goes beyond theory. It equips medical professionals with critical knowledge about the unique risks and demands faced by seafarers, including national maritime and seafarer-related legislation, seafarers’ welfare and safety, ship types and structures, emergency procedures and the latest directives issued by MMD. Most importantly, it includes a hands-on vessel tour, where participants can directly observe the working and living conditions onboard.
This real-world experience helps doctors make better, more informed health assessments, not just based on symptoms, but with a deeper understanding of the physical and mental toll life at sea can bring. The session was also joined by representatives from MISC Marine and Group HSSE, reinforcing our shared commitment to seafarer health, safety, and operational readiness.
Quick fact! Why this matters to our stakeholders?
- Better health decisions – Helps doctors understand the real demands of the job so they can give accurate, responsible medical assessments.
- Safer voyages – Reduces risks of medical emergencies of disruptions caused by undetected health issues.
- Support for seafarers – Reinforces our shared duty of care for the people who power our maritime operations.
This meaningful engagement also strengthens the collaboration between MISC and the MMD in supporting Malaysia’s maritime sector. By helping medical professionals see what’s at stake, we are investing in a healthier, safer, and more resilient seafaring workforce.
Because at MISC, we believe every journey begins with people, and their wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do.
